A Vintage New Years

 

Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010!

Its not just the resolutions, but the thanksgiving like mentality of counting your good fortunes.

This time lets really try and stick to our resolutions- just for once-

But this year, more than any other, Im finding myself thinking about all the things Im thankful for. They call this the decade from hell but without this decade Id still be in the new kid in middle school trying to get through geometry. No thanks.

Family.

Irreplaceable friends.

Priceless experiences.

Passions lost and found.

But we've still got youth and a whole life ahead.

Rodarte

Rodarte for Target- this is the closest many of us will get to the infamous line where skirts go for more than I paid for my car and dresses could pay half the years tuition.

The line has this magnificent concept of combining the realm of fashion with art. The pieces are more often art than clothing. Its not something to thrown on and head to the store..or even to go to a nice dinner- this line is for that once in a lifetime occasion when perhaps your walking the red carpet? or attending a ball..

My favorite look yet is this (the one to the left)- patches, monochromatic, leather, wide stitches, multi mediums..

After seeing what the Target collaboration had, I was slightly let down. Maybe I was hoping for some less practical versions- but I snagged this little number which doesnt look Rodarte to me at all- but it fits the limited color scheme Ive become obsessed with.

I Can Find in a Melody

Im on this kick of only wearing blacks, whites, and grey's.

Im also on a kick of being in the holiday spirit.

This is what happens after putting the two together..

Black, white and grey give me a sense of freedom that clothes with colors dont. Colors are limiting- all of a sudden there can be too much going on- some colors dont work well together even though the cut of the pieces would have- or they are too much of a statement piece so they cant be worn over and over without seeming like it was worn it yesterday...

With the basic colors, the style becomes more about layers, combinations, the cut, the shapes and silhouettes.. Completely freeing.

Behind the Orange Peels

Finally break! Getting used to being back in the middle of nowhere-

Small things seem like a big deal when your in suburbia. Be careful- you might end up being the only person not in sweats in the local Target.

Now just to convince my little brother that being yourself is a good thing...

"Can you not look so fashion-y when you come to my soccer game?"

At least he's a proud spectator at my shows.

Found these images from a while back..

It got me thinking about how wonderful it is to go through such intense fashion phases. This past summer and fall high waisted skirts were my go-to item. Its been so long since Ive worn one but its satisfying to have a drawer full of well used skirts.

Before starting the pieces for Queen of Hearts I made this yellow test piece out of some vintage curtain cloth- it has a lovely ribbed texture.

Visual

Being creative is something that comes from within but there is so much more to it that that. The way you surround yourself, the places you go, the music you listen to, the people around you...everything is a source of inspiration and a source of influence. Living in a dorm can sometimes be the most sterile place- nothing stimulating.

I use magazine clippings, photographs from past projects, paintings that mark certain periods in my life.. anything that can keep my creativity going.

Its here! Winter is finally here! It took so long that I almost forgot that it would actually be coming at all.

These pictures are from a little while back but Im sitting here in a basic duplicate except plus this sweater and this scarf.

So basically- Ive turned into a ball of knitted wool!

Andd on the excitement front- Ive made my first sale at Queen of Hearts! This little number has found a new home! Ill be heading down to the store with a couple more pieces on Tuesday.

We Were the Kings and Queens of Promise

Found a little vintage treasure roaming around SoHo on Saturday. I needed a little something to bring my outfit from day to night- and this was perfect! I don't like purses, bags or anything related to a girl-lugging-container-full of uselessness.. so this was perfect because it slings across and I can forget about it.

The wonderful thing was that the shop was a non profit organization and all the money that they make goes straight towards helping the homeless get back into the workforce.

The items were all donated from private people or even designers themselves.

So many treasures to find.
